How to Create Hashtags for Your Consulting Business or as a Job Seeker

You need to know how to create discoverable hashtags for your social media posts, whether you are an entrepreneurial consultant, employed, or job seeker. 

To create hashtags, consider the category, topic, event, theme, conversation, campaign, location, contest, Twitter Chat, and more so others can engage when they search for a particular hashtag.

Consider creating a branded hashtag just for you or your business. As the ChemPharma® Professional Association, we could use:

#chempharmaprofessionalassociation but that is too long

#chempharmaassociation is still too long

#chempharmassn which would work, but we are choosing to use

#chempharma or #ChemPharma 

Here are some hashtag tips:

HASHTAG TIPS

  • Start each hashtag with the # (pound) sign
  • Don’t use spacing between words
  • Do not include symbols  
  • Do not add any punctuation
  • Short and sweet is better than using many words together 
  • Do a spell check, so your hashtag is discoverable
  • Before creating a branded hashtag, make sure it has not been used before 
  • Know that anyone can use a hashtag; they cannot be registered as a trademark or service mark
  • Mix up your hashtags, so you don’t use the same ones every time
  • Capitalize the start of each word to make it easier to read; i.e., use camel case #ChemPharma instead of #chempharma
  • No hashtag stuffing for spammy posts; i.e., don’t use too many hashtags 
  • Follow FTC guidelines with your hashtags, so you don’t get fined if your posts are sponsored
  • Hashtag popularity differs by platform (e.g., #instagood works on Instagram better than other platforms)
  • Use hashtags on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter
  • Follow hashtags on LinkedIn and Instagram
  • Ask others to follow your branded hashtag as a call to action 
  • If you post the top two hashtags on LinkedIn (#India and #Innovation), your post will most likely be buried in a nanosecond, so use a hashtag that has fewer followers
  • #do #not #hashtag #every #word #in #your #social #media #posts
  • Try best-hashtags.com to search for any related hashtags 
  • Try metahashtags.com for the best Instagram hashtags
  • Try hashtagify.me to search for hashtag popularity
